Our final meeting of the week was with members of a group called Comhairle na nÓg . This youth council gives children and young people the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies across Ireland. About a dozen of the members from the Dublin area were kind enough to meet us on Friday afternoon in City Hall to share their thoughts on whether the city is ready for solar energy on municipally owned buildings.
My colleagues and I were glad to hear such positive reactions to the concept we’re researching on this Smarter Cities Challenge. The children that we met with were so sharp – they inspired me with their understanding of and commitment to environmental issues.
Not only did the youth council members give us their endorsement for solar in Dublin, they also helped us with some creative ideas for rolling out a marketing campaign to support the initiative in their communities. I have a feeling we will be using some of these when we deliver our final report later this month to Dublin City Council!
