Geraint and I met with Dr. Witaya Chadbunchachai, of the Trauma and Critical Care Center at Khon Kaen Hospital, to get his insights on traffic and public safety. The center handles trauma cases from Khon Kaen as well as referrals from other regions. He shared a lot of valuable data about traffic accidents and causes, and we talked about ideas and approaches to help improve traffic safety.
Dr. Witaya and Khun Supaluck Chalepad (Commander Nurse of the Center) also gave us a tour of the impressive Command Control Center which manages the dispatch of 200 ambulance stations across the province, and supported about 100,000 ambulance missions last year. Calls to the emergency number 1669 are handled by the center, which dispatches ambulances to reach incident sites within an average of 8 minutes. The Trauma Care Center is also focussed on educating the public about the use of emergency numbers, and they will be doing this with the help of about 8000 volunteers this year.
Our host Dr Witaya was very gracious with his time, and today’s visit gave us a unique perspective of the traffic safety issues faced by the city, along with valuable insights.
