Today we visited the Nanfeng Kiln in Foshan to get a historical perspective of the pottery art of Foshan and where it all started.

We were taken on a tour and saw the ‘Dragon Kiln’ which played a dominant role among the kilns of Shiwan Town.

Dragon Kiln Nangeng kiln2Such a kiln is always built against a hill and winds its way along the slope, resembling a gigantic dragon. Timbers are used and are put into the kiln, the burning kilns temperature can reach to 1,300℃ (2,372 F), I just cant imagine working in that heat, just standing here today was hot enough.

Beside the kiln stood a 400 year-old banyon tree whose roots were interwoven in the stone, quite an amazing site and a wonder that it can survive those high temperatures.Banyon Tree
