After an extremely busy weekend of visiting some historical sites in Sendai and participating in the Cherry Blossom Festival in Date City, it was back to work this morning. The dozen or so interviews we conducted last week with government officials, farmers and other stakeholders, gave us a good sense of the issues Date City is facing and some of the actions both the citizens and officials have already taken.
We made some good progress today gathering our thoughts and starting an outline that will form the structure for our proposal. We also plan on doing a few more interviews this week to fill in some of the gaps in our information. Tomorrow we are starting the day helping some farmers pick the buds off the peach trees to get them ready for the peak peach-growing season. We will also have the opportunity to talk to a young farmer who is having some good success.
At the end of the week, we will again meet with the mayor of Date City and share our thoughts in order to get his input before we draft the final recommendations.
Just an aside, we had a small earthquake here last night…right around bedtime everything started to shake. Our Japanese teammates were not concerned so we took our cue from them.
