Today was all about cameras – the surveillance type. New Taipei City has made a large investment in surveillance cameras. Due to a large and growing population in the city (approx 4 million), public security and traffic issues have become more serious. Since the introduction of surveillance cameras, crime rates have reduced and citizen satisfaction has increased. The goal for 2013 is to have 6 cameras for every 1000 residents.
The team were out on site at selected road intersections and crime hotspots to see the different types of cameras in action. This was followed by a briefing at Xinhai police station to hear about cases that were solved through camera images and to see how the officers access the footage caught on camera.
