Lessons in Policing in New Taipei City

This afternoon we toured New Taipei City with two guides from New Taipei Police Department (NTPD. We started at the main NTPD base in Banqiao with the first stop being at the site of the old ‘Dried Tofu Brothels’ in Sanchong. Apparently the old brothel buildings looked like fried Tofu. These were demolished and replaced with luxury apartments and the residents of the old housing were offered social support and even employment to eradicate a crime hot spot. Sanchong is a very busy but reasonably orderly district with investments being made to upgrade some of the older housing.

Next stop was Sanchong police station where we had a lesson in policing and an introduction to the mobile technology used on the police scooters and cars. Scooters are required as many of the streets are too narrow for police cars. There are approx 7000 police in New Taipei City and there is still a minimum height requirement here, 168cm for men and 160cm for women.

We then drove through Luzhou and Wugu districts before stopping in Bali (not the island paradise!). This last district was more residential than Sanchong and a little more suburban.

Tomorrow it is all about forensics.
